“Have the mass street protest before the election. Don’t do it afterwards. If you want to inspire people and pull them together, do it now and not after it’s too late.”
-Anne Applebaum on lessons from Poland on repelling authoritarian rule
I’m of the stay and fight persuasion; my brother likes to stay abroad with wife and daughters all duals and living abroad.
On this: “Historian Richard Hofstadter, in his seminal 1964 essay on The Paranoid Style in American Politics, presciently wrote, “in a populistic culture like ours...a highly organized, vocal, active, and well-financed minority could create a political climate in which the rational pursuit of our well-being and safety would become impossible.”
Is the counter strategy to organize and finance a “vocal, active” majority to push back? And to think anew about (1) education, especially civic education, and its importance; (2) avoiding the slide toward oligarchy and grotesque accumulation of wealth by a very small cohort and the instability that comes with it?
The pen is always mightier than the sword. Keep writing!
